Fellowship information
Pediatric gastroenterology
The fellowship program at Children's Memorial Hospital prepares qualified pediatricians for careers in gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. The basic program consists of 12 months of clinical education and 24 months of research experience, meeting the training requirements of the American Board of Pediatrics Gastroenterology Sub-Board. Individuals intending to pursue full-time academic practice are encouraged to extend their training to five years, either in a basic research track or a clinical research program. A program for foreign medical graduates, who anticipate returning to their countries of origin, focuses on science-based clinical practice. In 1997, the program received full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
The principal goal of the fellowship program is to prepare qualified pediatricians for careers in academic pediatric gastroenterology, including the potential for developing independent research programs. Adequate time must be allowed for the development of research skills, which generally takes a minimum of two and up to four years.
