Intestinal rehabilitation and transplantation program

The pediatric intestinal rehabilitation and transplantation program at Children's Memorial is a multidisciplinary program devoted to avoiding transplantation if possible using medical, surgical and nutritional rehabilitation strategies with 80 percent of our patients avoiding transplantation through intestinal rehabilitation.

Approaches used by the multidisciplinary team to avoid transplantation include:

  • The serial transverse enteroplasty procedure (STEP), a surgical technique used to increase bowel length and help increase absorption
  • Nutritional strategies to help patients maintain normal growth
  • Isolated intestinal transplant before irreversible TPN-associated liver injury calls for a liver transplant

What is short gut syndrome?

Short gut syndrome, or more commonly called short bowel syndrome (SBS), occurs from intestinal failure due to conditions such as necrotizing entercolitis and gastroschisis.  The small intestine is completely removed or in some cases only portions of the bowel are surgically removed.

Intestinal research

The research done by Dr. Cohran is an important part of the pediatric intestinal rehabilitation and transplantation program at Children's Memorial. More information about both clinical and laboratory research »
