Children's MyChart

Adult Congenital Heart Disease

Although I am legally an adult, I see a pediatric cardiologist because they're more familiar with heart problems you are born with. Read more.

Our adult congenital heart disease team is led by Andrew de Freitas, MD. Hyde M. Russell, MD, is the surgical director. Steven Kindel, MD, cares for patients with adult congenital heart disease, and has expertise managing patients with heart failure.

Trained and certified to care for children and adults, Dr. de Freitas specializes in adult complex congenital heart disease, including transposition of the great arteries, tetralogy of Fallot and single ventricle. He sees patients at both Children's Memorial and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Dr. Russell, MD, operates at both hospitals.

An integrated approach to adult congenital heart disease involves close collaborations between our cardiovascular-thoracic surgery, electrophysiology, heart failure and heart transplant teams.

For example, Dr. de Freitas works closely with pediatric electrophysiologists Barbara J. Deal, MD, and Sabrina Tsao, MD, in treating adults with single ventricle physiology. He also teams with Dr. Tsao and Gregory Webster, MD, to care for adult congenital heart patients with arrhythmias who require pacemakers or defibrillators. Due to the complexity of adult congenital conditions, our Heart Center has developed one of the foremost cardiac arrhythmia services for congenital heart disease. As survival rates improve, and the number of children living with congenital heart disease continues to grow, this Heart Center team is uniquely positioned to provide continuity of care from adolescence into adulthood.
