Glossary of terms

enuresis (bedwetting)

refers to the involuntary emptying of the bladder. When it occurs during sleep, it is called nocturnal enuresis. When it occurs during the day, while awake, it is known as diurnal enuresis.

glomerulonephritis

a group of diseases that cause inflammation of the glomeruli, the tiny kidney structures that filter blood. Glomerulonephritis is usually characterized by the presence of blood and protein in the urine, elevated blood pressure and, often, impaired kidney function.

hypercalciuria

an excessive amount of calcium in the urine. This condition may cause blood in the urine, contribute to the formation of kidney stones, or may even contribute to poor bone formation.

kidney stone

a solid piece of material that forms from crystallization of excreted substances in the urine.

nephrotic syndrome (also known as nephrosis)

typically begins with puffiness around the child's eyes and is characterized by the presence of unusually large amounts of protein in the urine and consequently lowered levels of protein in the blood
