New Care Trends in Cystic Fibrosis by Adrienne Prestridge, MD, and Susanna McColley, MD Published Fall 2006
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a common inherited genetic disorder caused by mutations of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene. Median survival has increased significantly over the last 20 years, from around 25 years in 1985 to almost 37 years in 2005. The improvements in survival and clinical status are associated with early diagnosis, specialty care, and application of evidence-based therapies, including new therapies for CF.
Research: From Molecular Genetics Questions to New Therapies for Cystic Fibrosis by Vita Lerman Published Fall 2006
One of the major clinical challenges in treating patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is clearing the abnormally thick and sticky mucus from the airways, in order to prevent obstructive lung disease and chronic bacterial infections that may lead to lung failure – a major cause of mortality in CF patients. At Children's Memorial Research Center, molecular geneticists are approaching this challenge by trying to clarify the mechanisms that alter the biochemical and biophysical properties of mucins or mucus proteins) in CF.
