Child abuse has devastating consequences for children and families, particularly when it goes unrecognized. Physicians play a vital role in identifying child abuse. If physicians consider the possibility of child physical abuse whenever they evaluate an injury, they will be far less likely to miss it. Ultimately this will lead to more timely interventions and the prevention of needless suffering and death.
