Specific suggestions by ultrasound type, and child's age

ABDOMINAL (liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas and spleen)

  • Infants to 12 months: No food 2 hours before exam. May drink water.
    • Please note: If your child is having an ultrasound to evaluate for pyloric stenosis, no water before the exam. You may be asked to give a bottle during the exam.
  • Toddlers 1-4 years old: No food 3 hours before exam. May drink water. If potty trained, do not allow urination 1 ½ hours prior to appointment time.
  • 5+ years: No food 6 hours before exam. May drink water. Do not allow urination 2-3 hours prior to appointment time. 

PELVIC

  • Infants to 12 months: Keep well hydrated to maintain a full bladder. May eat and drink.
  • Toddlers 1-4 years old: Drink 24 oz. of water half an hour before exam. If potty trained, do not allow urination or catheterization at least 1 hour before exam to maintain a full bladder during exam. May eat.
  • Child 5-11 years old: Drink 24 oz. of water 1 hour before exam. Do not allow urination or catheterization at least 1 hour before exam. Bladder must be full during the exam. May eat.
  • 12 years and older: Drink 32 oz. of water half an hour before exam. Do not allow urination or catheterization at least 2 hours before exam. Bladder must be full during the exam. May eat.

RENAL (kidneys and bladder)

  • Infants to 12 months: Keep well hydrated to maintain a full bladder. May eat and drink.
  • Toddlers 1-4 years old: Keep well hydrated to maintain a full bladder. If potty trained, do not allow urination or catheterization for half an hour before exam. May eat and drink.
  • All other ages: Do not allow urination or catheterization for at least 2 hours before exam.
