Key to success is the center's skilled, experienced leadership and collaborative approach. The center is co-directed by pediatric medical and surgical specialists, both of whom have pioneered procedures now used around the world.
- Pediatric surgeon Riccardo Superina, MD, holds dual credentials in both pediatric surgery and transplantation surgery, making him one of few such experienced physicians in the country today. He is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric surgery, dedicated to advancing surgery in pediatric transplantation, pediatric liver disorders, living-donor and reduced-size, split-liver transplantation, liver disease (biliary atresia), hepato-biliary surgery, and bowel transplantation.
- Pediatric hepatologist Peter Whitington, MD, played a leading role in developing the intricate surgical techniques that have made living-donor pediatric liver transplants possible. He currently serves as the site Principal Investigator of the Biliary Atresia Research Consortium (BARC), a multi-year, multi-center study funded by the National Institutes for Health on the cause and treatment of biliary atresia. This research aims to improve future care of children with biliary atresia, currently the leading indicator for pediatric liver transplants in the United States.
