The Division of Transplant Surgery provides excellent, integrated care to children with advanced liver, intestinal and kidney disease. While transplantation is the primary service offered to children with severely compromised and life-threatening organ failure, the transplant surgeons at Children's Memorial Hospital are also uniquely qualified to explore alternative and innovative transplant-sparing procedures. Children's Memorial Hospital’s Transplant Surgery team utilizes a comprehensive approach aimed at improving your child’s own organ function.

Our multidisciplinary team consists of surgeons specially trained in pediatric transplant surgery, nurse practioners, pediatric nurses, researchers, medical technicians, and administrative staff, all committed to ensuring the best possible care for your child.

Over the last decade, the division has become internationally recognized for its work in pediatric portal hypertension and extra hepatic portal vein thrombosis (EHPVT). We have treated children with this rare condition from 20 states and 5 countries. Children's Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in Illinois and surrounding states to perform the innovative procedure required to treat pediatric portal hypertension.

Children's Memorial is also a leader in research, treatment and management of biliary atresia, currently the leading cause of liver transplant in the United States. The hospital is one of 12 clinical research centers participating in the Bilary Atresia Research Consortium (BARC), an NIH-funded consortium designed to propose, develop and undertake trials related to bilary atresia.

Our transplant surgeons specialize in many complex surgeries for both organ transplant and non-transplant patients. We average over 50 solid organ transplants annually and multiple, intricate, non-transplant procedures based on the specific needs of your child.  These specialty surgeries include surgical treatment for pediatric portal hypertension and EHPVT, the Kasai procedure for biliary atresia, hepatoblastoma resection, pancreatic surgery, complex hepatobiliary reconstruction, vascular and peritoneal access for dialysis, intestinal rehabilitation surgeries, and solid organ transplants that include intestinal, kidney, liver and multi-organ transplants. Your surgeon will discuss your child’s specific surgery with you at your outpatient visit. Call 1-800-KIDS DOC to arrange an appointment.

Children's Memorial Hospital’s Division of Transplant Surgery is dedicated to providing the highest quality care for our current and future patients. We continue to provide educational opportunities for fellows, residents, medical students, nurses and allied health professionals to learn about these innovative surgical procedures.
