Pediatric urology is a unique surgical and medical subspecialty dedicated to the care of children with disorders of the urinary tract and genitalia. These disorders can be congenital or acquired. Common problems cared for by pediatric urologists include urinary tract infections, wetting, hernias, hydroceles, undescended testis, urinary reflux, hydronephrosis, and hypospadias. See Health topics for more information on specific problems of interest.
Why a pediatric urologist?
Because children are different. A child's urinary tract (kidney, ureter, and bladder) and genitalia are different than those of an adult, and the medical and surgical management of problems in these areas require a different approach on the part of the treating physician.
About the staff
The pediatric urologists at Children's Memorial are all board certified urologists that have completed additional fellowship training in pediatric urological surgery. They are nationally recognized as experts in the field and have practices limited to the treatment of children. In addition to caring for common urologic conditions, each member of the division also has special interests in more complex pediatric urology problems such as neurogenic bladder (spina bifida), bladder exstrophy, intersex, pre-natal identification and care of urologic abnormalities, and minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy).
Along with several nurse practitioners and a large number of specialized ancillary staff, the division of pediatric urology at Children's Memorial Hospital is committed to providing total comprehensive care of the urinary tract in children.
