Recent Illinois Legislation Passes Bill Mandating that all School Boards have a Student Athlete Concussion Policy
House Bill 200, awaiting Governor Quinn’s signature for approval, mandates the school boards in the state work with the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) to develop clear guidelines to educate coaches, student athletes and their parents about head injuries and concussions. It further requires school boards to adopt a policy regarding these injuries and that a formal agreement be signed by the student athlete and parent before participation in any sport is allowed. In April, the IHSA Board of Directors approved a new policy regarding return to play guidelines following a concussion, including the necessary clearance by a licensed healthcare provider before a student athlete can return to play post-concussion.
